Francois Chollet - LLMs won’t lead to AGI - $1,000,000 Prize to find true solution
Просмотров 114 тыс.14 дней назад
Here is my conversation with Francois Chollet and Mike Knoop on the $1 million ARC-AGI Prize they're launching today. I did a bunch of socratic grilling throughout, but Francois’s arguments about why LLMs won’t lead to AGI are very interesting and worth thinking through. It was really fun discussing/debating the cruxes. Enjoy! Check out ARC-AGI Prize here: arcprize.org Links: Transcript: www.dw...

On covid, there's another path between "let it rip" and "lock down everything". Free tests for everyone forever, upgrade air filtration in public spaces and workplaces, pay subsidies to employers for workers to quarantine. This is something I wish we were doing now, as I watch increasing numbers of friends develop long covid. A single long covid case is an unimaginable tragedy for that person and their family, and a financial disaster- we lose all the productive work they would have done, all of the tax income, and pay decades worth of benefits and health care costs. Even mild cases that leave people with long-term brain fog have a huge impact on the economy. There's strong support for the hypothesis that covid leaves you with a weaker immune system, so even if you don't have obvious long covid, you're still an easier target for other health problems. I think we're thinking about covid in the wrong way. The deaths are the tip of a very big iceberg.

Richard Franks' explanation of the Japanese surrender in his book "Downfall" is more accurate than this one. The Soviets were not the key reason. Japanese leaders thought we only had one bomb, necessitating the use of the second to prove our point. That couple with a looming famine with Japan, really motivated those leaders proposing peace.

BS typical neomarxist academics find any historical rational, ignore the counter evidence, draw conclusions that support your world view. Japan's overwhelming reasoning was that China was weak, japan was strong, racially superior, and untied behind a strong military controlled government. Because they could! These factors may be true, but not significant in manchuria. Pearl harbor sure.

"Britain, in most cases, did not fight to try to hand on to its empire"... What ???? It's hard to take any of the rest of it seriously after that. There is a list too long to count of wars related to hanging on their empire, from the Boer wars, Zulu Wars, putting down rebellions in India, Canada. Was the American War of Independence not trying to hang on? Even today the reservation of 'law' to Westminster, with the implication of the use of force to uphold the 'law' is being used to prevent the Scottish Parliament from holding a referendum on Independence.

I think folks tend to forget that Covid became the third leading cause of death in countries like the US. And that was AFTER social distancing and widespread masking. We killed off entire strains of the flu dealing with Covid. So when I hear someone say, "It wasn't the Bubonic Plague," you have to remember that we can cure the Bubonic Plague now. We have proper sanitation and food safety standards. Covid still killed millions worldwide. Was it like Stephen King's "The Stand"? No, of course not. Did it have the mortality and disability rates of Polio? Yes, yes it did.

The bit from 44m in is a tl:dr of how to run a country. The one sentence "figure out the right policy and then shape the politics to fit that" is exactly what the current uk govt has not done arguably since 2010.
